Singapore’s expanding healthcare sector !


  • Singapore Exchange (SGX) currently lists 23 GICS designated healthcare stocks with a combined market capitalisation of S$25.7 billion and generated an average 2014 year-to-date (YTD) total return of 9.6%.
  • The largest capitalised healthcare stocks listed on SGX - IHH Healthcare Berhad and Raffles Medical Group are also in the top five largest capitalised stocks in the healthcare Sector of ASEAN region.
  • In 2014 YTD, the five best performers in the healthcare sector were Health Management International, Singapore Medical Group, Q&M Dental Group Singapore, Religare Health Trust and TalkMed Group. They have a combined market capitalisation of S$1.9 billion and generated median 2014 YTD total return of 40.6%.

Health Management International
Health Management International (HMI) provides healthcare and educational services in Singapore and Malaysia. The company owns and operates Regency Specialist Hospital in Johor, Malaysia and Mahkota Medical Centre, a tertiary care hospital in Malacca. The company also owns and operates HMI Institute of Health Sciences in Singapore and Mahkota Institute of Health Sciences and Nursing in Malacca, Malaysia.
HMI has a market capitalisation of S$153.1 million and generated 2014 year-to-date (YTD) total return of 86.2% which was the highest among the healthcare stocks. On 28 August 2014, HMI reported profit after tax for the financial year ended 30 June 2014,  increased 88% year-on-year from RM$19.2 million to RM$36.0 million (click here to view more).

Singapore Medical Group
Singapore Medical Group (SMG) is a private specialist healthcare provider with a network of 22 specialties. According to SMG’s corporate website, the Group currently has a total of 12 clinics located in Singapore which include Paragon, Mount Elizabeth Novena Specialist Centre and Novena Medical Centre.
SMG has a market capitalisation of S$40.3 million and generated 2014 YTD total return of 61.1%.  On 14 August 2014, SMG reported gross profit for the half year ended 30 June 2014, increased 28.6% year-on-year from S$3.5 million to S$4.5 million (click here to view more).

Q&M Dental Group (Singapore)
Q&M Dental Group (Singapore), together with its subsidiaries, operates a network of private dental outlets in Singapore, Malaysia and the People’s Republic of China. It provides dental healthcare services including aesthetic dentistry, children dentistry, consultation, crowns and bridges.
Q&M Dental Group (Singapore) has a market capitalisation of S$285.7 million and generated 2014 YTD total return of 40.6%. On 13 August 2014, the company reported the completion of the proposed acquisition of Qinhuangdao, China through Q&M China (click here to view more). On 11 August 2014, Q&M Dental Group (Singapore) reported profit net of tax for the quarter ended 30 June 2014, increased 42% year-on-year from S$897 000 to S$1.3 million (click here to view more). The stock went ex-dividend on 19 August 2014, distributing S$0.0041 per share in dividends.

Religare Health Trust
Religare Health Trust is a business trust with a portfolio comprising healthcare assets in India. The company investment mandate is principally to invest in medical and healthcare assets in Asia, Australasia and emerging markets in the world. According to the company corporate website, Religare Health Trust’s portfolio currently comprises 13 clinical operating assets and four greenfield clinical establishments.
Religare Health Trust has a market capitalisation of S$757.4 million and generated 2014 YTD total return of 28.5%. On 13 August, Religare Health Trust reported income available for distribution for the quarter ended 30 June 2014, increased 26% year-on-year from S$11.4 million to S$14.3 million (clickhere to view more). The stock went ex-dividend on 28 May 2014, distributing S$0.0414 per share in dividends.

TalkMed Group               
TalkMed Group provides medical oncology services to the oncology patients under the Parkway Cancer Centre brand name. The company offers its medical oncology services in the areas which include breast, colon, lung and liver. TalkMed Group operates a network of seven clinics in Singapore.
TalkMed Group has a market capitalisation of S$644.0 million and generated 2014 YTD total return of 25.8%. On 7 August, the company reported profit attributable to owners of the company for the quarter ended 30 June 2014 increased 15.1% year-on-year, from S$8.4 million to S$9.6 million (clickhere to view more). The stock went ex-dividend on 13 August 2014, distributing S$0.0213 per share in dividends.
