Downtrend/ Weak Stock in Singapore Part 2

We talk about a few downtrend stock in 2nd of November 2015, we see that most of them were lower now, average down at least 15%. So what does this tell us? Stay away from Downtrend Stock. Most people like to Hold when they are losing money, in the end, the losses become enormous, what I realized after many years in the market is, all big loss started from a small loss it is better to stop the loss before it is too big to cut. So set a stoploss for yourself, and follow it.

Trend Following with Michael Covel in Singapore

Trend Following With Michael Covel

Michael Covel, the author of the best Trend following book is in Singapore, he will be giving a talk on trend following with ShareInvestor

Check out more on www.Shareinvestor.com website! http://www.shareinvestor.com/sg

How does Trend Following work?

Trend following is a very straightforward trading strategy that can extract profits from up, down and black swan markets (rare or surprise events). For example, pretend you have no idea what way a market will go or for how long. Trend followers simply say that if Apple is trading at price level 300 and it starts to go higher -- buy Apple.

Should you follow the Stock Guru or be a Systematic Trader?

Are you trading with a system? Do you know when your system works and when it doesnt? or Are you just blindly follow what the "Guru" say about the market? Most market participant are "Guru followers" rather than "Trend Followers"

What is a Guru follower?
Someone who is consistently depend on other "different" peoples view, e.g When someone shout "BUY XXY stock" Guru follower will just jump in to buy, and after a few winnings, he will stick to the forum, and everyday he will just follow to see what else to buy. Buying is easy but the problem usually come when you need to sell the stocks and managing the losses. If without the right system, one cannot effectively control Risk that they are taking as they put all their focus on looking for the next opportunities. Eventually, they will end up making MANY small gains, and Big losses(dunno how to get out). Another reason of big losses is because after many small gains, traders tend to take on bigger risk as small gains cannot feed the ego and when the market Turns or volatility change they cannot react to cut loss or change to other stocks. In long run, you will have a hard time learning as there is so many Guru out there talking about different stocks using different method. Gradually you will get addicted to other people's opinion, which eventually builds indecisiveness.

Be a Trend Follower
Systematic - I am glad to say what we are doing is similar to Winton capital, our goal is to achieve consistency in trading by trading with our system. We trade with multiple model/system, monitoring price action and consistently controlling the Risk of our trading Model. Using a system will help you to know yourself, because nobody will tell you that you sucks because you cannot follow the simple rules in the system. Cut losses, let profit run. Only the trading system will tell you that, after many more occurrence, you will realize your mistake and improve on your system, mindset and risk management, which will gradually becomes a winning habit.

By attending courses that teach you Only the method, is a waste of money. The method is the least important things you need to focus on. New traders should focus more on learning how to get their objective in trading, if you want to run a hedge fund, then you should learn how to manage risk like big hedge fund. If you want to be king of Penny stocks, then you should look for some successful Penny stocks trader(that dont look like a Scamster). Nevertheless, whatever you want to be, its all about Practice, Practice Practice. There is no Quick and Easy way to get rich.

In the video below, lets learn from the TOP hedge fund in the world and see how they trade. They use system to get in and out of market, trade the signals, not the opinion. What we can learn is even big Fund have losing years, despite losing for 1 year, they are not ditching the system. They will continue to trade the system system as the system is expected to generate positive expectancy in a longer time frame. Not many people can do this.

Intervention - System is like a machine, it will help you most of the time but some time it will not work, you have to know when not to use the system. In the video Metthew mentioned: During the credit crisis, they spotted abnormal they Reduce the risk. "Never intervene to increase Risk"

Legendary Trader - Paul Tudor Jones Trading style and Beliefs

From Wikipedia

Trading style and beliefs[edit]

As reported in Market Wizards and the press, Jones futures trading style and beliefs are summarized as follows:
  • Contrarian attempt to buy and sell turning points. Keeps trying the single trade idea until he changes his mind, fundamentally. Otherwise, he keeps cutting his position size down. Then he trades the smallest amount when his trading is at its worst.
  • Considers himself as a premier market opportunist. When he develops an idea, he pursues it from a very-low-risk standpoint until he has been proven wrong repeatedly, or until he changes his viewpoint.
  • Swing trader, the best money is made at the market turns. Has missed a lot of meat in the middle, but catches a lot of tops and bottoms.
  • Spends his day making himself happy and relaxed. Gets out if a losing position is making him uncomfortable. Nothing’s better than a fresh start. Key is to play great defense, not great offense.
  • Never average losers. Decreases his trading size when he is doing poorly, increase when he is trading well.
  • He has mental stops. If it hits that number, he is out no matter what. He uses not only price stops, but time stops.
  • Monitors the whole portfolio equity (risk) in realtime.
  • He believes prices move first and fundamentals come second.
  • He doesn’t care about mistakes made 3 seconds ago, but what he is going to do from the next moment on.
  • Don't be a hero. Don't have an ego. Always question yourself and your ability. Don't ever feel that you are very good. The second you do, you are dead.

KLW, Federal, EZRA - stocks at Month High & Month Low

One of the way to spot uptrending and downtrending stocks is to see the stocks that is at month high or month low, usually we monitor this few times a week to see if some names appear very frequently - meaning they are LIKELY to be downtrending (Everyday make new low) or uptrending (everyday make new High)
For instance, HKland, KLW and Federal. We see them quite often, ya right they up everyday ;)
Ezra drop like crazy this few day, they are in this monthly low list.

Bottomline: stocks at 20days high/low not necessary always means that it is trending. They could be sideway trend and is at/near support. E.g UOB

Lessons learned from Quotes of Famous Guru

Few things i learned from the Guru's quote that i think if anyone who is want to make money in trading should follow.
1) Managing Risk, especially Risk of Ruin
2) Have a plan to Win, if you dont plan for yourself, you will fall into other people's plan.
3) Follow the Trend, almost all the successful and consistent trader trade trend.
4) Controlling Emotions, Ego, Anger, disappointment, Sadness, Anxiety... etc, All good traders go through these..
5) Learn how to win big by adding to your Winner

“I have two basic rules about winning in trading as well as in life: 1. If you don’t bet, you can’t win. 2. If you lose all your chips, you can’t bet.” - Larry Hite

"If you diversify, control your risk, and go with the trend, it just has to work." -Larry Hite

“It’s all about sticking to your plan and experiencing feelings as they arise. If you are unwilling to feel your feelings, the temptation is to avoid them by jumping off your system.” -Ed Seykota

"Don't be a hero. Don't have an ego. Always question yourself and your ability. Don't ever feel that you are very good. The second you do, you are dead." -Paul Tudor Jones

"It's not whether you're right or wrong that's important, but how much money you make when you're right and how much you lose when you're wrong." George Soros

NO WAY! It is Impossible to get such a return if you are following news or research report? That is why now I dont look at all these unless information but only look at our ART system. What have we learned so far from the Correction!

Have we learn something in this correction. A month ago, we notify our client to exit ''some'' of their position, as much as 30% of the portfolio in the stand of managing their RISK due to market behaving abnormally.

1)First thing we learn from this Correction is ''Market did give a sign when it is going into a correction'', ''A big correction usually start from a small drop''. A correction is a period where stock market stop rising. Normally after a period of uptrend and for the past few years, it takes at least one month to recover. After recover, market went higher, hence most people usually wait for a correction to come and they buy more during this period when price is falling. However what we do is completely different from most people. As a trend follower we only start buying when price start rising and mid term trend change.

2) We dont stay Long in this correction period, instead we should have Short position for most of our counters. When market turn up again, we will go long again.

3) When market start falling, many people will try to find out the news of WHY it is dropping, the main reason which what i always tell my client is ''People are selling'' and if the price move alot, These people are the big boys.

4) Time to learn shorting? During the past 1 over years we have been preparing our clients to use CFD, just incase the bear strike. In current event, Shorting tend to be more profitable and you can also hedge your portfolio if market tank further. Now is still not late to learn shorting if you are going to remain to trading for the next 10-20years.

5) Believing you are ''Right'' can be very expensive. I see people turn profit into losses when the trend changes. and the loss just turn bigger. E.g believing we are in a bull run, believing market will rebound, believing the stock is already at a critical support. A better way is to believe in a system or strategy(regardless u are using TA, FA or Trendfollowing) that can tell u an entry and exit rather than our own judgement. Most importantly is to be consistent of what we are doing, so from there we can tune it to trade better. If u are doing discretionary trading, just make sure u have stoploss + a weekly/monthly risk budget so u wont gamble too much away.

6) Lastly, our Emotion. If you are going thru a tough time now, try to Feel what you feeling now. Write it down so next time u know how to handle this. Don't give up on learning how to beat the game, today if you are losing, somebody out there has made Your money. =)

Again.. this is NOT a Buy/sell call Just a review, just show some chart for ur information.
 Supergroup recently call for exit,
Ezion fall 7% today, actually on last thursday our system call for exit and you should have exited this trade on last friday.
Osim up since last year September, this is one good demonstration of winning big. Since Sept 2012 this counter rise from $1.32 till  $1.95 on Friday. This trend took profit with 47% gain.

You Might be a Trend Following Trader if…..

“Trend  followers use reactive technical analysis. Instead of trying to predict a market direction, their strategy is to react to the market’s movements whenever they occur. This enables them to focus on the market’s actual moves and not get emotionally involved with trying to predict direction or duration.” -Michael Covel/ Trend Following

You Might be a Trend Following Trader if…..

  1. …you love buying break outs above resistance and new all time highs.

  2. …big trends make you happy not angry.

  3. …you do not trade the concept of something being overbought you just use a trailing stop.

  4. …your trading decisions are based on what is happening now, not your opinions, your fears of what will happen, or your hopes of what will happen later.

  5. …you risk a little capital over and over again to make a lot of capital eventually.

  6. …you are great at letting your winners run.

  7. …trend followers don’t need a story they follow actual price action.

  8. …you look for longs in a bull market and shorts in a bear market you are likely a trend follower.

  9. …higher highs and higher lows are one of your best indicators to go long.

  10. …you have been long $SPY for the majority of 2013 instead of trying to fight the parabolic move up.
